Prisoner of Azkaban Summary:
Chapter 5: The Dementor

Finally, it comes time for the trio to return to Hogwarts. Harry, Hermione, and the entire Weasley family board some borrowed Ministry cars for the trip to King's Cross Station. As Mrs. Weasley is saying goodbye to her children, Mr. Weasley pulls Harry aside and tells him that there is something important Harry needs to know. Harry admits to overhearing the conversation between the Weasleys the night before, and assures Mr. Weasley that he isn't scared. Mr. Weasley asks for Harry to promise that no matter what happens, he won't go looking for Sirius. Harry is astonished, but before he can get any other answers out of Mr. Weasley, he must board the train.

The only compartment left for the trio is at the end of the train, and is occupied by an unkempt adult. Hermione deduces that he must be Professor R.J. Lupin, since that name is written on his suitcase, and that he must be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Since the professor is fast asleep, Harry informs Ron and Hermione of everything he's learned from Mr. and Mrs. Weasley.

Then, the topic of conversation turns to Hogsmeade. Ron and Hermione are both very excited about being allowed to visit, though for very different reasons. Harry is again disappointed, because he never got his permission form signed, and he will not be allowed to go. During their time on the train, Crookshanks furiously tries to escape from his basket and attack Scabbers.

Suddenly, the train begins to slow down, and luggage and passengers alike are thrown as it stops. The lights go out, and the trio, Ginny, and Neville fumble around in the darkness to right themselves. Professor Lupin wakes up and tells them to stay where they are. The doorway to their compartment opens, and Professor Lupin speaks to the hooded figure at the door, shoots something silver out of his wand at it, and it leaves. However, as the figure is present in the doorway, Harry becomes overwhelmed by intense cold and a screaming voice. This causes him to pass out. He regains consciousness moments later, and learns from Professor Lupin that the creature was a Dementor from Azkaban prison. Harry learns that he is the only one of the group who passed out, and the only one who heard any screaming. He is embarrassed due to the fact that, unlike everyone else, he was extremely affected by the Dementor. Professor Lupin forces him to eat some chocolate and the train continues to Hogwarts. When they arrive in the castle, Professor McGonagall calls Harry and Hermione aside. Harry is sent to see Madam Pomfrey, the school nurse, to make sure Harry suffered no serious damage from the events on the train. Professor McGonagall also has a word with Hermione about her schedule, and the three of them return to the Great Hall.

In his opening speech, Professor Dumbledore warns the students of the Dementors, saying that they have been placed at the gates to protect the students, but that the students are not to cross them. In addition to Professor Lupin, Dumbledore welcomes Hagrid to the teaching staff. Professor Kettleburn, the previous Care of Magical Creatures teacher, has retired, and since Hagrid's name had been cleared the year before, he is allowed to take over. After the feast, the Gryffindors return to their common room. Another year has officially begun.
