Prisoner of Azkaban Summary:
Chapter 17: Cat, Rat, and Dog

Just as Crookshanks approaches, Scabbers squirms out of Ron's grasp and Ron runs after them. Hermione and Harry try to catch Ron before the Minister of Magic comes out of Hagrid's cabin, but before they have a chance, the huge black dog comes out of the forest. The dog knocks Harry over and then grabs Ron in his mouth, carrying him off. They realize that they have reached the Whomping Willow. The dog drags Ron and Scabbers though a gap in the roots of the tree. Hermione and Harry can't follow because the branches are impeding their path, but Crookshanks darts through and presses his paw against a knot in the tree that freezes it. Harry explains to Hermione that Crookshanks and the dog are friends. They go under the tree, into a long tunnel that leads into Hogsmeade. They come out in a room that Hermione guesses to be the Shrieking Shack. They hear a creak overhead and run up the staircase. Ron is sitting on the floor, with his battered leg at a strange angle. He is okay, but says it wasn't really a dog- it was an Animagus. Harry and Hermione turn to see Sirius Black.

Sirius, holding Ron's wand, uses "expelliarmus" to remove Harry and Hermione's wands as well. Harry makes a move forward to attack him, but Hermione and Ron stop him, telling Sirius that if he wants to kill Harry, he'll have to kill them first. Sirius tells Ron to sit down to avoid damaging his leg more, though Ron refuses to leave Harry. Sirius tells them there will only be one murder that night. Harry demands to know why, seeing as Black didn't mind murdering thirteen people, plus his parents. Harry lunges forward, trying to hurt Sirius as badly as he can. This results in a fight between all present, including Crookshanks. Harry manages to get his wand back and points it at Sirius, who is now sprawled on the floor. Black says that he doesn't deny killing Harry's parents, but says that Harry needs to know the whole story.

Harry is about to kill him when they hear footsteps downstairs. Hermione shouts that they are upstairs, and soon after Remus Lupin bursts into the room. Lupin takes the wands from Harry and Hermione using "expelliarmus" and asks, "Where is he, Sirius?" The trio is bewildered by this question. Sirius points at Ron. Lupin is trying to reason through this new information, asking why he hadn't shown himself before, unless they had switched without telling him. Black only nods. Lupin lowers his wand and hugs Sirius Black. At this, Hermione starts screaming, saying that she had been covering up for him, that she had trusted him. She claims that he has been helping Black get into the castle, that he wants Harry dead, and that he is a werewolf. Lupin says that he has not been helping Sirius get into the castle, that he doesn't want Harry dead, but admits that he is a werewolf. Hermione admits she has known since she did Professor Snape's essay and that she has noticed he is ill at the full moon and that his Boggart is the moon. Lupin gives the trio their wands back, and explains that he has been looking at the Marauders Map, knowing that they would go visit Hagrid. Lupin states that he wanted to keep an eye on them. He says that they were accompanied by someone else when they left Hagrid's hut, and he had thought the map was malfunctioning, but he knew the Map never lies. He then claims that Scabbers is an Animagus, by the name of Peter Pettigrew.
