Prisoner of Azkaban Summary: Chapter 20: The Dementor's Kiss
On the way back, Harry points out that this means Sirius is free. Sirius says that Harry is his godson, and that once Sirius's name had been cleared, Harry is welcome to come live with him if he wants, though he would understand if Harry didn't want to leave his aunt and uncle. Harry says that he definitely wants to leave the Dursleys, and asks if Sirius what time he can move into Sirius's house, if he has one. Sirius is thrilled, and he smiles for the first time since Harry has seen him, making him finally recognizable as the man in his parents' wedding picture.
It is already dark out, and when the moonlight suddenly comes from behind the clouds, Lupin goes rigid and starts shaking. Hermione realizes that Lupin hasn't taken his potion and will turn into a full-fledged werewolf. Sirius transforms back into a dog, yelling at the others to flee while he deals with Lupin. Pettigrew grabs Lupin's wand and casts a spell on Ron that makes him lie motionless on the ground, and then transforms back into a rat. Harry and Hermione try to get Ron back to the castle, but then they hear Sirius's whimpering in the distance and run to help him. Sirius is on his hands and knees, with a hundred Dementors gliding toward him from across the lake. Harry and Hermione try to cast a Patronus, focusing on Sirius - his innocence - and the thought that Harry will never have to go back to the Dursleys, but the Dementors are nearing and they still haven't conjured a corporeal Patronus. Harry can feel the Dementors closing around him, and one of them lifts him up and removes its hood to reveal empty eye sockets and a gaping hole for a mouth with a rattling breath. Right as the Dementor is about to perform the kiss, a silvery light shines all around them, and Harry sees a Patronus animal galloping across the lake, rejoining its conjurer, who looks very familiar. Harry then faints.
