"If we turn our heads and look away and hope that it will all disappear then they will - all of them, an entire generation of people. And we will have only history left to judge us."

Fan Fiction Rules

  • All fan fictions should be longer than 800 words, unless you are submitting a prologue or poetry.
  • All fan fiction MUST be spell-checked and preferably beta-edited prior to submission. If there is any evidence that a story has not been checked prior to submission (and yes, we can tell), it will be returned immediately. This applies to capitalisation in titles and summaries, the capitalisation of names and places within the HP universe and the use of punctuation.
  • All fan fiction must be prefixed by a legal disclaimer to the effect of 'all characters, settings, etc, are the copyright of JK Rowling and Bloomsbury Publishing' to avoid copyright breach.
  • Veritaserum.com will not accept fan fiction that is deemed offensive to any race, age, religious group, gender, nationality, political persuasion or sexual orientation. For instance, a character like Draco Malfoy may make a comment like 'filthy, unpure mudbloods', because that is an expression of a character and not used in a positive way, but having a heroic character say something like 'AMERICANS R STUPID! BOO DEMOCRATs' and having it as part of the storyline is unacceptable.
  • All fan fiction must be submitted with the full knowledge and approval of the author of the work. Express written permission must be obtained from an author if a person other than the author wishes to submit fan fiction.
  • Fan fiction in the pseudoscript format (that is, dialogue in the chatroom format with very minimal descriptive prose in between) will no longer be accepted. The usage of chat dialogue formatting in small portions of a fic, provided that the use is acceptable and serves a purpose within the story, will be allowed.
  • All lyrics used within fan fiction MUST be attributed to the rightful source. It's all right if you're just referencing a song name, but if they lyrics feature in any part of your fic whatsoever, in any format, a disclaimer which includes the writers, performers and recording label which released the song must be provided at either the beginning or the end of a fan fiction.
  • Additionally, fan fiction will not be allowed where original content comprises less than 70% of a submission; that is, if you intend to use song lyrics within your work, you must use sufficient fan fiction within your story to avoid copyright breach.
  • Fan fiction must adhere to US censorship guidelines; that is, all content within a fan fiction MUST correspond to the rating given by the author. If there are any instances where discrepancies lie, fan fiction administration will adjudicate. Fan fiction of a nature that is gratuitously and graphically sexual in nature will not be admitted, as the highest rating approved on this site is an R. Veritaserum.com does not accept fan fiction rated NC17.
  • Intertextual author's notes are not permitted within the fan fiction itself. Authors notes are permitted at the beginning, or at the end, of fan fiction.
  • All fan fiction titles MUST be correctly capitalised and punctuated. It is no longer acceptable to use non-alphanumeric characters at the beginning of your title in order to have your fan fiction listed at the beginning of our database.

Rules about reviewing

  1. No swearing (You can't even put '*' in place of some letters, because it's just about as obvious as putting the full word.)
  2. No advertisements: None for other non-related sites or even your story. You may say "From Bob, the writer of Harry Potter and the Rotten Fish of Doom," but don't put a link or have any comment about your story in the actual review.
  3. Do not post more than once unless you forgot to score them the first time.
  4. Do not post anything that's not related to the fanfic or isn't a review. It will be deleted.
  5. If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all: If you didn't like the story, then you can say so, but make it constructive criticism (telling them what was wrong and how they can improve it) and not just "this story suks!!" That will be deleted.
  6. Don't review your own story: If you want to explain something to the reviewers, then you can submit a review so that people can see it, but don't vote just to make the rating go up, because that's just unfair, especially if the average was 2 stars and you bumped it up to a 3.
  7. Don't say your story is better: This rule is basically between the "If you have nothing good to say" and the "advertisement" rules. I don't want to see anyone reviewing someone's story going "my storee wuz bettar11!!" Nobody likes an arrogant person...so just keep your pompous thoughts to yourself, even if your story was, in fact, better than theirs.
  8. You spam, we ban: If you spam someone's story by constantly repeating the same review over and over, then you will be banned from the fanfic section. I have much better things with my time then to delete every review that says some random word a hundred times (on occasion, that hasn't been a hyperbole -_-)

Thanks, and happy fanfic-ing!
