Reuters has a new article looking at the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and in it director David Yates discusses Jo's involvement with the films:

"She's really gracious, she's not territorial," he said. "She kind of recognizes the challenges of adapting (a book for a film) and she's really sympathetic to that."

"She said now that the shooting part is coming to an end she might just pop in more often, which we would love," Yates said. "She was so busy with all the other books she couldn't (visit much more than once a year)."

Variety predicts $7 billion gross for Potter franchise.

After Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is released, Variety predicts that the studio
will have grossed $7 billion
from the Potter franchise alone. This bold prediction comes from a new article where they look at what 'tentpole' films Warner Brothers has lined up over the next few years:

Tentpoles, the thinking goes, can justify megabudgets for top talent, lavish action sequences and special effects since they'll rake in dough for other divisions (TV, homevid, merchandise and vidgames). And in the case of new properties like "The Green Lantern" and "Sherlock Holmes," it can also establish an evergreen franchise.

Call Sheet Found in Woods Confirms Filming Location

A 10-year old boy found a call-sheet in the woods around Bracknell's Swinley Forest while out walking his dog. The call-sheet, titled "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Call-Sheet 78 Revised" was lying on the ground in an area of the forest that security guards had previously denied that Harry Potter filming was taking place. The reasoning for why film crews were in the area was a documentary called "Extra Time". Click on the images to see the call-sheet and map clearly.

A close look at the call-sheet shows what cast members were to be present that day and what scenes would be filmed. The full article can be found here.

Bill Nighy casted as Rufus Scrimgeour in DH

It seems that Bill Nighy has been casted as Rufus Scrimgeour in Harry Potter and the Deathly hallows. For years Nighy has been complaining about being the only British actor without an appearance in the Harry Potter movies.

Rumors have been rampant on the Harry Potter message boards that the actor had finally made it to the cast list. Nighy is quoted as saying: I don't think I'm allowed to say it but I'm going to be in the next Harry Potter film. I won't say which character, but he's a goodie. I just got the gig.

Harry Potter stunt double will never walk again

A terrible news arrived today from People.co.uk. Injured Harry Potter stuntman David Holmes has been told by doctors he will never walk again. David's spine was damaged when a controlled explosion went wrong and hurled him to the ground during a flying scene for the new movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

"Although David has been told he'll never walk again he is still not giving up hope. Deep down he knows it's unlikely but it's still early days and so he's not giving up completely", revealed a friend of David.

Film bosses are now bracing themselves for a lawsuit from the stuntman and it is believed they have agreed to pay his wages until the end of filming. They are also paying his mortgage until a permanent settlement is negotiated.

A studio spokesman declined to comment. David's family also did not want to comment.

The Darkness of Harry Potter

The Herald Sun via News.com from Australia released an article yesterday on Daniel Radcliffe and the love of his character, Harry Potter.

"I wouldn't be there still after eight years if I didn't love what I did and didn't want to invest a lot of myself into what I'm doing,'' Radcliffe says.

"Neither would the rest of the crew who have stood by the films for eight years.''

The article details Radcliffe's interest in the maturity of his evolving character and the Wizarding World around him. As his character grows he understands better the complexity of what is around him and their inherent dark nature. This is what keeps Dan coming back for more and more, the writers explain.

Dan also talks about the upcoming films, their unique style, purists of the Potter Series and his other works.

Potter Films Anticipated

In a contradictory report to our article
featured yesterday on the economic woes of Hollywood and what it meant for future installments of the Harry Potter films, Bloomberg.com reports today that Hollywood looks to the Potter film series, as well as other sequels, to stem the decline of ticket sales.

The article states that the Hollywood industry would have topped 2007's record of $1.41 billion in ticket sales for 2008 if Warner Bros. hadn't changed the release date of the 6th installment in the Potter franchise to July 2009.

The year 2008 saw only $1.33 billion in ticket sales and the first five Potter films averaged $282 million in sales.

Recession Troubles Hollywood

Posted By Tom on 12-28-08 @ 11:30 PM - 22 comments - Link
With everyone's wallet a little lighter around the world, it comes as no surprise that anxiety is building for even the largest of industries, namely Hollywood.

In an article by The Independent, the credit woes of today's economy are outlined by the vulnerability of our favorite series: Harry Potter. The real worry comes from major film companies pulling the plug on popular fantasy book adaptations. With Disney withdrawing support for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader after the Prince Caspian flop and Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials hitting a dead end after meager earnings with The Golden Compass, it makes one wonder whether or not the Potter films can survive the financial debacle.

The article cites a possible lack of anticipation for the Potter films without the drive for new books generated by Rowling before her series was complete. So the question that we should ask ourselves is a simple one- If we are true to ourselves, how much has our fanaticism for Harry Potter diminished? We should also ask ourselves whether or not we will go out in hordes to see the last three installments of the film series, will we go see them multiple times in the theater (I wasn't the only one, was I?), and will we spend the extra money on the collector's edition DVD rather than the ordinary version?

When it all comes down to it, will our determination and loyalty stand true after a few more years? Will it be enough to keep the series afloat when so many titles are sinking? Be sure to write a comment and share what you are thinking with the rest of us.

Harry Potter Gets New Threads

"Harry Potter is going high fashion." says New York Magazine yesterday on their website.

Reports show that Belstaff clothing manufacturers will be featured by Daniel Radcliffe in a future Potter film. As many sites note, it is not known whether or not the clothing will be for the Half-Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows movies.

Belstaff is a well known company for high-performance waterproof jackets and has made great lengths in their respective field. Founded in 1924, Belstaff attire has been featured in many motion pictures including X-Men 3, War of the Worlds and more recently, The Dark Knight.

Teams of cinematography experts and production designers visited Glenfinnan, Glen Etive, Glencoe and Glen Nevis, all Lochaber landmarks which have already become established in the series.

They were looking at the autumn and winter changes of the terrain, trees and vegetation in these areas, and have since been in Yorkshire examining tracts of moorland to supplement the Highland locations.

Craig: First DH film could end on Ron's return

Movie Magic magazine brought in its July issue a large Half-Blood Prince-related report, which includes several exclusive interviews with many members of the cast and crew.

The most important piece of information, though, was given by production designer Stuart Craig, who spoke about the splitting of the two Deathly Hallows movies:
We don't have a script yet, so we don't know. I've heard it suggested that the first film ends with the return of Ron Weasley. His return is an emotional high. I guess that could provide a very satisfactory ending. I don't know if Steve Kloves, the writer, agrees, but we'll find out when we receive that first script.
Craig also states that the sixth film in the series is "one of the most challenging of them all", and that they only "built two tiny little parts of it [the cave] and the rest is a computer-generated set."

Isaacs talks pre-DH plot knowledge

In an interview with ComingSoon.net focused mainly on his work in the Harry Potter movies, actor Jason Isaacs (who plays Lucius Malfoy) discussed the bit of the plot of Deathly Hallows that JK Rowling shared with him prior to its release.

He said, "Before it came out, I wasn't quite sure – there was a point where I wasn't sure I was going to do [it] anymore because there wasn't much for me to do in number five and I wasn't in number six. I met Jo Rowling for the first time at a big awards dinner. I went over and basically fell to my knees and said 'Get me out of prison, I beg you.' She looked over her shoulder and looked back at me mouthing, 'You're out. Chapter One.' And that was it, that's all I had to know, and I signed up immediately."

Isaacs also said that he is "very excited" to reprise his role in the seventh and final film, and also that "the woman who is playing my wife I've been a fan of for a very long time. In fact, one of the great things about going to do Harry Potter at all is that a lot of people who are my acting idols I see sitting in make-up chairs beside me. To get to do scenes with Gary Oldman and Richard Harris, Michael Gambon and now Helen McCrory, who I'm a big fan of – it's fabulous."

Davis: Flitwick 'light relief' in HBP

In an interview with MTV News, actor Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick) spoke about his role in the upcoming Half-Blood Prince movie, saying that his character serves as "light relief" in the film. "My character seems to get involved in fun stuff now," he said. "I've had an immensely enjoyable time again. It's a real honor to be a part of number 6."

Davis also expressed satisfaction with the recent decision to split Deathly Hallows into two films, saying: "I think that's a good idea because when you try and squeeze these quite lengthy novels into a two-hour movie, a two-and a half hour film there is gonna be stuff that's left out. There's so much in the last book, I think it'll make two really good films. It's worthy of that."

In a new interview with Film Review magazine, Daniel Radcliffe discussed Harry's character in both Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, saying that in HBP, "Harry is unhappy for a lot of this film, mainly because people keep trying to kill him. And his love life is awful, too. That's what Jo does so well, combining everyday, mundane problems with this incredible other world."

He also did some forward-thinking reflection on the end of the series: "It will be very, very odd to suddenly not be coming back to Harry Potter. And I'll be sad to leave the character behind and not see on a daily basis the friends that I've made."

The full interview will be published in the June issue of Film Review.

Yates: 'Great privilege' to direct 'Hallows'

Posted By Matthew on 03-13-08 @ 1:29 PM - 27 comments - Link
Warner Bros. officially announced today that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be split into two films, which will be released in November 2010 and May 2011, as was reported yesterday.

David Yates, who will direct both parts of the movie, said, "I've had great pleasure working with a tremendous cast and crew thus far, on both 'the Order of the Phoenix' and 'the Half-Blood Prince.' It's a wonderful world to work in and be part of and to create within, and I consider it a great privilege to continue to bring Jo's extraordinary world to the screen, and to be the director to complete this epic and exhilarating journey."

David Heyman again weighed in: "The Deathly Hallows is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that after discussing it with Jo, we came to the conclusion that two parts were needed to do it justice."

'Deathly Hallows' to be split into two films

Posted By Matthew on 03-12-08 @ 9:25 PM - 76 comments - Link
The Los Angeles Times reports today that, for the first time in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be split into two films, the first of which will be released in November 2010 and the second of which will come out in May 2011. According to the paper, David Yates will direct both films, and Steve Kloves will return as screenwriter for them both as well.

Daniel Radcliffe was interviewed about the decision, saying, "I think it's the only way you can do it, without cutting out a huge portion of the book. There have been compartmentalized subplots in the other books that have made them easier to cut -- although those cuts were still to the horror of some fans -- but the seventh book doesn't really have any subplots. It's one driving, pounding story from the word go."

Producer David Heyman agreed: "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing Quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. and those subplots...but with the seventh, that can't be done."

JK Rowling is said to have agreed to the two-movie plan. It has yet to be determined where in the storyline the first film will cut off, and whether it will end with suspense or some resolution. The first film will be called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One, and the second will be called, predictably, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two.

Yates wins award, hints at 'Deathly Hallows'

At tonight's Empire Awards ceremony in London, Order of the Phoenix director David Yates won an award for helming the film. OOTP was nominated for several other awards, but his was the only win of the night. Afterwards, when asked about rumors he will also direct Deathly Hallows, Yates said: "We're talking about it every day. But I can't really say right now. I'm tempted, certainly."

With Yates's obvious interest, it is highly likely that he will sign on as the HPDH director in the coming weeks or months, as Harry Potter directors have historically been given the opportunity to continue in the series if they desire.

Jim Broadbent, Jason Isaacs, Emma Watson, Katie Leung, and Evanna Lynch also attended the ceremony. Some photos of them are up at Empire's website. Thanks to HPANA for the tip!

Rumor: Yates to direct 'Deathly Hallows'

Author Lois Lowry wrote on her blog today that David Yates was expected to direct the film version of one of her books, The Giver, but "has just decided he wants to do the final Harry Potter first."

Warner Bros. has yet to announce who will direct Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, so for the time being, regard this as a rumor. But as we have said before, this is a highly likely prospect, as WB has always given each director the opportunity to continue, and Yates isn't showing any signs of losing steam.

According to MTV, an official announcement is expected within one to two weeks.

Isaacs disappointed with character's behavior

He said: "It's a source of great embitterment in the Isaacs household. But he's in Azkaban, so what can you do?"

Issacs was hopeful that he would return to film Deathly Hallows: "I hope I'm coming back for seven. Dan's going to Broadway to do his play for a long time, so I don't know when or if I'm going to come back. But I'll be even more bitter if I don't get to return for seven!"

At this week's BAFTA awards ceremony in London, Daniel Radcliffe was asked about the rumor that has been circulating that Steven Spielberg is being considered to direct the seventh and final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This is what he had to say:
"It's absolute rubbish that Spielberg is directing the final film. It's not true. There's absolutely no foundation in that at all.

"I have no idea how that rumour started or where it came from. It's not true. How's that for a definitive answer?"
It is standard practice in the Harry Potter franchise for the director of the previous film to be offered the chance to helm the next as well, so if David Yates is interested, chances are he will be given that opportunity.

Also at the ceremony, producers David Heyman and David Barron spoke openly about the possibility of splitting Deathly Hallows into two films, saying: "We are still discussing it. The announcement will be made hopefully in the not-too-distant future...It would be brilliant not to have to cut anything."

Del Toro wants to direct 'Deathly Hallows'

Pan's Labyrinth and Hell Boy director Guillermo del Toro told MTV today that he is "definitely interested" in helming the seventh and final Harry Potter movie "now that the movies have grown darker." He explained that they "have a contrast between the gloomy existence of the kid and the world he's exposed to. They have evolved into a really nice universe."

Four years ago, in the run-up to the release of Prisoner of Azkaban, del Toro offered praise for that film, gushing that he was "blown away by it."

Despite these comments, however, bear in mind that WB is not in talks with del Toro, and it is likely that David Yates will stay on board through the end of the series.

JKR to auction HP supplementary book for charity

The BBC is reporting that JK Rowling will auction off one of the seven copies of the five fairy tales she wrote from The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a series of fictional stories mentioned in the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This comes as surprising news, given the fact that prior to this there was no knowledge of the fact that JK Rowling had written five extra stories for the Harry Potter series (with the exception to The Tale of the Three Brothers, which can be found in the final book of the Harry Potter series).

The article states that, "[one] copy will be auctioned to raise money for her charity, The Children's Voice, and the author has already given away the rest of them." The book will be sold in an auction at Sotherby's in London this December, with a starting price of £30,000.

Photos of JK Rowling holding and reading from the book can be seen at CBBC's website.

Edit: As this must surely be perfect timing, JK Rowling has just updated her website, where, in the news section, she goes into detail about which five stories she had written and her choice of putting the seventh copy of the book for auction on December 13th.

Dan talks about the end of 'Deathly Hallows'

As part of the press conference in Los Angeles earlier today, Daniel Radcliffe spoke to Collider about the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and the sixth movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which he says will begin production in ten days.

The interview is full of spoilers for the final book, where Dan talks about what he thought of Harry's fate and the last few chapters, so please read with caution.

Dan was asked about his thoughts on whether or not Alfonso Cuaron could come back and direct the seventh movie, and had this to say:
Q: A lot of people thought Alfonso Cuaron did such an amazing job of the third movie and he’s talked about he’d be willing to come back to the franchise, would you like to have him back for book seven.

Daniel: It’s a very interesting question. I loved working with Alfonso, so I don’t want this to be misinterpreted in the slightest, but I really love working with David Yates. Who knows if he’ll do book seven. But also I think to be honest it’s really nice to have new directors come on board. Who know, it’s a long way off, book seven, it depends if David is willing to do it, I don’t know if he will be, it’s a long way off so I don’t know at the moment. But I would love to work with him (Alfonso) again in the future, I don’t know if Potter will be the place where that happens.
The entire article can be read here; thanks to TLC for the link.

Remember that Dan will be on 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno' in a matter of minutes (11:35 EST).

Report: John Williams hopes to return to HP

Although Order of the Phoenix composer Nicholas Hooper will be back for next year's Half-Blood Prince, a report from a recent lecture given by John Williams states that he is hoping to return for Deathly Hallows in 2010.

The report's author writes, "I asked John if he was hoping to score the last Harry Potter film and stated that he was sorely missed on the last two films (not to detract from Doyle's or Hooper's excellent work). He said with confidence that he thinks he will be back for the last and then added that he hopes he is!"

Bear in mind that this has yet to be confirmed, but it's certainly encouraging news for all "Hedwig's Theme" lovers. Check out our Deathly Hallows movie section for more information on the film.

Dan: 'I just can't wait' to film 'Deathly Hallows'

In his first post-Deathly Hallows interview, Daniel Radcliffe said that he "just can't wait to be able to film" the movie adaptation of the book, which should hit theatres in the summer of 2010. He said that he finished the book two days ago:
I actually wrote, in the front of my book, the exact time of me starting to read it. I think it was 9:30 at night on the 22nd of July, which was the day before my [18th] birthday. I read two chapters on that day, which wasn't very much at all, of course. About page 30, I got to. Then I actually didn't get to read [any of] it again for another couple of days. I started again on the 24th and 25th, and over those two days or so, I seemed to completely demolish it. I read 350 pages in one day at one point.
The full interview, which is riddled with HUGE plot spoilers, can be read at Entertainment Weekly's website.

Trio signed on for final HP films

Warner Bros. has announced that Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson will all return for the final two Harry Potter films, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Jeff Robinov, President of Production at WB, said, "When Daniel, Rupert and Emma were first cast as Harry, Ron and Hermione, we knew they were not only talented, but had a very special chemistry. Through the years, and in each of the 'Harry Potter' films, we have watched them grow into extraordinary young adults, as well as remarkable actors. It would be inconceivable to imagine anyone else in the roles with which they have become so identified, so we are thrilled and proud that Daniel, Rupert and Emma have chosen to complete the arc of their characters in the final two films."

Also, WB announced that David Heyman will return as a producer for both HBP and HPDH as well.

"Fine, I'll try and teach him again!" Snape snarled at Professor Dumbledore.

"Severus, please, for me, don't take all those old wounds that you gained from James out on Harry. Harry is not James - do not blame him for what happened." Dumbledore spoke quietly, but his blue eyes held a warning. Snape sighed in frustration...
