Revised Lexicon to be Published

Posted By Janet on 12-22-08 @ 6:48 PM - 18 comments - Link
Steven Vander Ark will publish his revised Potter encyclopedia, “The Lexicon: An Unauthorized Guide to Harry Potter Fiction and Related Materials” (RDR Books). Vander Ark began revising his original book immediately following the judges ruling in favor of JK Rowling in 2007. He assures that his newest version does not infringe on JKR's rights and adheres to the court's demands.

“We learned a lot at the trial about what was acceptable, what would follow the fair use guidelines,” said Vander Ark. “That was not clear before. There was no law on the books that made it clear what was acceptable and what wasn't. So, coming out of the trial, I had a much better idea of what should go into the book.”

Both the publishers and a representative from Warner Bros. say that they are pleased with the outcome of the matter.

The book should hit the shelves on January 12, 2009. For the full article, please see TODAY.

Lexicon publisher delays book, case set for court

A federal judge in New York today barred "completion, distribution, marketing or advance sales" of the planned Harry Potter Lexicon book until February 2008. Last week, JK Rowling sued RDR Books and Steve VanderArk, the publisher and author, for their intention to publish the online information database in book form for profit.

For the third time in the past two weeks, Jo updated her website today with a news post on the subject, saying, "I take no pleasure in the fact that publication has been prevented for the present. On the contrary, I feel massively disappointed that this matter had to come to court at all. Despite repeated requests, the publishers have refused to even countenance making any changes to the book to ensure that it does not infringe my rights.

"Unless their position changes, we will all return to court next year. Given my past good relations with the Lexicon fansite, I can only feel sad and disillusioned that this is where we have ended up."

Full JKR interview airs on 'Dateline'

Meredith Vieira's extended interview with JK Rowling aired tonight in a one-hour special on NBC's "Dateline." Here's a brief summary of non-spoiler-related topics that were touched on:
  • Jo said that although she has to resist the urge to tell everything in a book, the encyclopedia will be a "different kettle of fish."
  • Quidditch remains her favorite made-up word in the series.
  • She explained in more depth why she gave a certain character a reprieve.
  • She "told all three of them (Dan, Rupert, and Emma) stuff about their own characters" before book seven was released.
  • She hopes to take her children to the Harry Potter theme park in Orlando once it opens. She mentioned that "they're planning one ride that's for younger kids."
  • "The world hasn't ended" for her, as she still has the sixth and seventh movies and the theme park ahead of her.
  • "I'd certainly edit 'Phoenix' a bit better," she said. It's "too long."
She concluded by saying that she is "the luckiest woman in the world." Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were also interviewed about JK Rowling and the books. Dan said that Jo is "totally lovely," and Rupert added that "she's really cool."

UPDATE: A transcript of the entire interview is available on MSNBC, but watch out for spoilers!

Jo will write Harry Potter encyclopedia!

In her interview with Meredith Vieira of the "Today" show, author JK Rowling confirmed that she will write an encyclopedia of the world of Harry Potter, "promising many more details about her beloved characters and the fate of the wizarding world beyond the few clues provided in the seventh book's epilogue."

In the past, Jo has said she might write an encyclopedia after the series is over, but this is the first time she has definitively said she will write it.

"I'm not going to (write the encyclopedia) tomorrow because I'd really like a break," she said. "So you may be waiting."

In this article, which contains major plot spoilers, Jo reveals which character got a reprieve and which two she decided to kill instead. She also hints at the futures of several characters who survived.

"Fine, I'll try and teach him again!" Snape snarled at Professor Dumbledore.

"Severus, please, for me, don't take all those old wounds that you gained from James out on Harry. Harry is not James - do not blame him for what happened." Dumbledore spoke quietly, but his blue eyes held a warning. Snape sighed in frustration...
