Biography: Alan was born in 1946 to parents who were Irish and Welsh. His father died when he was eight, leaving his mother with four children to care for. A while later, Alan won a scholarship to West London's Latymer Upper School, his teachers encouraged him to act. He was also interested in the arts, so he went on to study graphic design at the Royal College of Art. He founded a Soho-based design company, but after finding that he loved acting, he abandoned the company. When he was 26, he started studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After spending 3 years at the RADA, he started making a name for himself on stage. In 1988, Alan recieved his first "dose" of screen recognition with the film Die Hard, which starred Bruce Willis. After a few poor films, he again recieved acclaim after playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Even though Alan was in many films and his voice was featured on the TV series, King of the Hill, it wasn't until he became Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films that he b ecame mainstream. Currently, he's starring in Love Actually, the Actors, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, due out next June.

-Alan was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history (#34). [1995]
-He ranked #59 in Empire (UK) magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list. [October 1997]
-Although a highly successful film actor, he has frequently passed up film offers to return to the theater. (A place and activity which he calls "magical" and his "first love".)
-He was nominated for Tony award as Best Actor for Broadway revival of "Private Lives", May 2002.
-He was given the role of Severus Snape in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone only after Tim Roth backed out.
-He was named Best Stage Actor for his part in the acclaimed revival of the Noel Coward play Private Lives at The Variety Club Show business Awards 2002.
-While filming Die Hard (1988), he was found proficient at mimicking American accents; a scene in which Hans Gruber and John McClane finally meet was then added to the script.
-Alan won the British Academy Award, Best Supporting Actor for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in 1991.
