Biography: Richard Griffiths was born on July 31, 1947 in Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland, England, UK, to a young deaf couple. He learned sign language at an early age in order to communicate with his parents. Although he was born in Stockton, he was raised in Thornaby. Richard lived a somewhat troubled life. During his childhood, he attempted to run away many times. He dropped out of school at the age of 15. He worked as a porter for a while, until his boss encouraged him to go back to school. He decided to attend a drama class at Stockton & Billingham College. This decision changed his life forever. After graduating, Richard earned a spot on BBC Radio. He also worked in small theatres, sometimes acting and sometimes managing. After settling in Manchester, Richard began to get solid lead parts in plays. From there he began to appear on the small screen in televison shows and then got his big break on film in "It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet."
